Our take

Ride With Pride is a family barn off West Highland, between Town Square and 114, and it has been run by the same owner, Doreen Bruton, since she founded it. It teaches Western riding, and the lessons are as much about the horse as the riding. In a one-hour group class a child learns to brush and saddle a horse and helps with the barn chores, then rides.

The school horses are older and gentle, picked for beginners, with others to stretch a rider who is ready for more. Lessons run as a fall term or in shorter sessions, in groups or privately, and the barn builds class times around when its students are free. The instructors are certified with the Certified Horsemanship Association.

Beyond lessons there are Saturday pony rides for younger children, day camps on school holidays, and birthday parties on a covered dock that looks over the pond and the pasture. Children meet goats, chickens and barn cats as well as horses. It's a place to learn to ride and to look after a horse, and it suits beginners and younger children best.

Local Tips

The barn is at 480 W. Highland, minutes off 114. It runs by text, so to book a tour, a trial lesson, a pony ride or a party, text Doreen rather than calling. A few practical things:

  • Come for a tour first. The barn asks families to visit, meet the horses and staff, and decide from there.
  • Lessons are sold as a 15-week fall term or five-week sessions, paid up front or on a payment plan. New students pay a one-time registration fee.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes to a trial lesson. The school horses carry riders up to 190 lbs.
  • Camps run rain or shine. Full-day campers bring a sack lunch, and early drop-off and late pick-up are available for an hourly fee.
  • At a party you bring the cake, snacks and decorations. The barn provides the horses and the first hour, and the covered dock is yours after that.
Carroll ISD Connection

This one has a real Carroll ISD tie, on two counts. The barn's day camps are set on Southlake Carroll ISD school holidays, and the posted dates line up with the district's days off, so Thanksgiving week, winter break and spring break each have a ready answer.

The owner's own story runs through the district too. The site says Doreen Bruton's love of horses goes back to her time as a student at Southlake Carroll High School.

Credentials

Doreen Bruton is founder, owner and instructor, certified by CHA and PATH, and has owned and operated Ride With Pride since 1980.

Brittany Bruton is a CHA-certified instructor and the barn's administrative assistant. She competes in ranch horse and mounted shooting on her own horses.

Kelli Hurst is CHA trained, has over 55 years of horsemanship experience, and has been part of the team since 1996.
