Dates

Camps run as 4-week sessions (12 sessions across the year, roughly aligned to each month), grade-banded — PreK/Kindergarten early reading and phonics, 1st–2nd and 3rd–4th/4th–6th spelling, vocabulary and grammar, and Kindergarten–6th writing labs. Tuition is prorated for mid-session starts. Contact the center for the current session dates.

Our take

Reading Ranch does one thing and only one thing: reading and writing, with no math or test-prep track diluting the focus. That focus traces straight to its founder, Dr. Kim Southwell, whose Ph.D. research produced the curriculum the center teaches — so the phonics, spelling, fluency, and guided-reading work isn't a franchise binder, it's a reading scientist's own program. For a Southlake family whose child is struggling to read, or who has dyslexic tendencies, that pedigree is the reason to look here first.

The classes are grouped tightly by stage — PreK four-year-olds building letters and sounds, kindergartners on language enrichment, first and second graders in multisensory language work flagged as helpful for dyslexic tendencies, and third and fourth graders in reading intervention on fluency and vocabulary. It's built for early readers laying a foundation and for kids who need to rebuild one, in small groups rather than a lecture. If you need a math tutor or an SAT class, this isn't the place; if reading is the thing keeping your child up at night, it's squarely aimed at that.

One practical draw: it runs both in person and virtually, and it's open seven days a week, including Saturday and Sunday blocks — useful for families juggling a packed weekday schedule.

Local Tips

Reading Ranch sits on East Southlake Boulevard. The unusual thing to know is the calendar: it's open seven days a week, including Saturday mornings (8:30 AM–1:30 PM) and Sunday afternoons (10:30 AM–3:30 PM) on top of weekday afternoons and evenings — so if weekday after-school slots are a scramble, the weekend blocks are a genuine option. Classes are grouped by grade band, and the center assesses each child first to place them, so the entry point is an assessment rather than a walk-in. In-person and virtual are both offered, which helps on a week when getting across town isn't happening.

Credentials

Reading Ranch was founded and is owned and directed by Dr. Kim Southwell, who holds a Ph.D. and an M.Ed. in Reading Education from Texas Woman's University. Her background includes 22 years of teaching as a Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Elementary Reading Specialist, a Dyslexic-Tendencies specialist, a college professor of literacy and child development, a language therapist and reading tutor, and a reading coach. She began the program as a reading-improvement class run out of her home, and her doctoral research study was based on the curriculum she developed for Reading Ranch.
