Our take

Pinstack is a bowling alley that kept adding to itself until it became a full entertainment complex. Under one roof in Westlake you get the lanes, a two-level laser tag arena, an indoor high-ropes course, a rock-climbing wall, bumper cars, and a video arcade, plus a sit-down restaurant and a full bar with a climate-controlled patio. The bowling anchors it, but the real draw is that nobody in a mixed group ends up stuck waiting their turn — there is always another thing to go do.

That combination makes it a group-and-occasion place more than a drop-in playground. It is built for a birthday party, a rainy Saturday with school-age kids, a team outing, or a night when the adults want a cocktail and dinner while the kids burn off energy. It skews older than a toddler play space — the attractions carry their own height and age limits, and the room gets loud and busy on weekend evenings — but for elementary-age kids and up, and the parents with them, there is a lot to do. It also runs late, to midnight on weeknights and 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, so it works as an evening venue as much as an afternoon one.

Pinstack sits on Parish Lane in Westlake, minutes from Southlake. Walk-ins are fine for bowling and the attractions, but on a busy weekend you will wait — reserve a lane online for a guaranteed time, or put your name in at the Bowl Desk and they will text you when it is ready. A few things that trip up first-timers:

  • The only outside food allowed is a birthday cake (no ice cream cakes).
  • Balloons are welcome except in the dining area.
