Our take

Gracie Barra Southlake is the local outpost of one of the world's largest Jiu-Jitsu organizations — more than 1,000 schools across six continents, all teaching the same structured Carlos Gracie Jr. curriculum. That's the tradeoff in a sentence: you get a proven, standardized system and a deep bench of black belts rather than one charismatic coach's personal style.

It's built to be a whole-family academy. Four kids' tiers run from Baby Champions at six months up through the pre-teens, there's a dedicated women's program, and adults train Fundamentals through Advanced in both Gi and No-Gi. The structure is the case for it over a smaller gym: every class is led by a certified, background-checked Gracie Barra black belt, and the kids' classes are staffed by multiple black belts. It runs a competition team for those who want one, but the Fundamentals track and the women's program are built as beginner-friendly on-ramps, so it isn't only for competitors. The academy is well-reviewed across a large Google following. If you want a tight single-coach room, this isn't that; if you want a safe, organized, family-friendly path into legitimate Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu, the first class is free, so the cost of finding out is zero.

Local Tips

Gracie Barra is on West Southlake Blvd in Suite 435 — go by the suite number rather than looking for a standalone building. A couple of things worth knowing:

  • Every kids' class is staffed by multiple black belts, and there's a dedicated sideline where parents can watch the whole session.
  • The way in is the free first class — they'll lend you a gi (no purchase), pair a new kid with a buddy, and slot them into the right age tier, which start at six months.
  • Classes run most days from a 6 a.m. adult slot through the evening kids' tiers, with none on Sunday.
  • One caveat: Boxing & Thai and the Brave Hearts adaptive program are advertised as "coming soon," so confirm those are running before you count on them.
Credentials

Gracie Barra Southlake is led by head instructor Professor Matheus Costa, a 3rd-degree BJJ black belt (2015) and IBJJF Master champion — Carioca-born, and a former engineering student who left the degree for the mat. The instructor bench is unusually deep for a single academy: Professor Galego, a 4th-degree BJJ black belt (2009) and Judo black belt out of Brasília; Professor Michael, a 1st-degree black belt (2023) known for his leg-lock game; and Professor Gabriela, a black belt (2024) who leads the kids' classes and the women's program. Every class is taught by a certified, background-checked Gracie Barra black belt, following the structured curriculum developed by Master Carlos Gracie Jr.
