Our take

Art House runs year-round on a five-session calendar that shadows the school year, so a child moves through drawing, painting, and sculpture roughly the way they move through grade levels. Classes are grouped tightly by age and skill, from a half-hour preschool class up to two-hour teen and adult sessions, and the through-line is real instruction in technique and art history, taught by degreed artists.

Students can start at any point, and because classes are small and age-banded, the program takes both the committed young artist and the beginner testing the water. Adults have their own classes, including an "Extra Special Art" program for adults with special needs, and camps run over spring break and the summer. It suits a child who has shown genuine interest and would get more from a structured class than from open craft time — progress here is counted in sessions rather than in projects carried home.

Art House Southlake is at 100 West Southlake Boulevard, Suite 440 — the Southlake studio of a small local company that started in Flower Mound in 2000 and also runs a Highland Village location. A few useful things to know:

  • Registration and the week-to-week schedule run through an online booking system rather than a printed calendar, so you sign up and see open class times there.
  • Classes are small and age-banded, so a given age's session can fill.
  • Because the calendar is built as five sessions that track the school year, the natural entry points are the start of each session, though the studio does let students join at any time.

Birthday parties are a separate offering with their own booking and deposit.

Credentials

Art House is owned and operated by Anita Robbins, who has taught art for more than fifteen years, works as a professional artist, and holds a degree in Fine Art from Brigham Young University; she still teaches classes across ages and levels at the studios. The business, Studio Art House, Inc., was founded by a family of artists in 2000, and its curriculum is taught and approved by degreed professional artists. Classes are structured by age and skill level, with a dedicated "Extra Special Art" track for adults with special needs.
